Jeff McCormick, McCormick Computer Resale, Inc., Apple Valley received an Excellence in Youth Employment Services Award at the Dakota-Scott Workforce Investment Board’s (WIB) annual legislative and awards event held Dec. 16 at the Burnsville Performing Arts Center.
The award, sponsored by Dakota Electric, is presented to an organization, program, employer or an individual in Dakota County who has demonstrated a commitment to and effectiveness in preparing young people ages 14–21 to enter the workforce.
“For more than 15 years, McCormick Computer Resale has been an educational business partner with the Rosemount High School (RHS) Work Experience Program.” noted Barb Starr, who nominated McCormick for the award. “Starting as a small company of four people that repairs and services practically every make and model of NCR/ IBM/ PSC POS systems, MCR has grown to more than 30 employees.”
She adds, “The first RHS Work Experience student placed at McCormick Computer Resale is now the company’s Sales Manager. Other students became full or part-time employees while they continued their post-secondary training. During their employment, Jeff never hesitated to pull students into his office to check on their school attendance or academic performance. Working with the teacher coordinator, he would take students off the schedule until their grades improved. He would not allow them to come to work if they were absent from school. ‘School is your first priority,’ he would say to them. ‘No school, no work!’ He was also the first one to congratulate them when they got back on track, or reward them when they had solid work performance. Jeff is an amazing mentor. Rosemount High School is fortunate to have MCR and Jeff McCormick as an academic and business partner.”
The Dakota-Scott Workforce Investment Board oversees employment programs and WorkForce Centers in Dakota and Scott Counties including sites in Burnsville, Shakopee and West St. Paul.
