Charging your electric vehicle (EV) at home just got easier! Dakota Electric® now offers a virtual metered EV charging program for members who want to participate without needing to install another meter.

HOW IT WORKS

This virtual metered EV charging program estimates your EV charging based on 15-minute intervals of data collected from your primary service meter. While not as precise as a dedicated submeter, this program leverages your smart meter to analyze your EV’s charging times. It offers you the opportunity to receive a 0.02 $/kWh credit to charge your EV at a lower rate during off-peak times (midnight to 7 a.m.), with no physical modifications to your charging circuit or meter. All EV charging will be billed at the standard residential rate, with off-peak charging receiving a credit. Charging during the peak period (4 p.m. to midnight on weekdays) will void the credit for the month if the usage is greater than 35 kWh.

ELIGIBILITY

This program participation is on a voluntary basis for Dakota Electric members who take service under Dakota Electric’s standard residential rate and who want to use a meterless service specifically for charging their EV with a Level 2 charger. To qualify for this program, your EV should be registered and drivable on Minnesota’s public roads.

If you have other energy-intensive devices similar to EV charging — like electric water heaters or electric heaters — you will not be eligible for this service unless those devices are separately metered under a different program. Eligibility for this program is subject to periodic review.

A smart meter is required to participate in this program. Those who have opted out of a smart meter will not be eligible.

This program is subject to change or cancelation.

Enrolling in this program DOES NOT qualify you for the $500 rebate available with other Dakota Electric EV charging programs.
